The world’s first AI beauty pageant recently crowned its inaugural winner, Kenza Layli, a Moroccan lifestyle influencer entirely generated by artificial intelligence. Layli, who has a strong social media presence with nearly 200,000 followers on Instagram and 45,000 on TikTok, was created by Myriam Bessa, founder of Phoenix AI agency. Layli's win in the Miss AI contest aims to promote diversity and inclusivity in the AI creator space.

Layli's creation involved advanced AI programs such as Open AI’s DALL·E 3, Midjourney, and Stable Diffusion for her images, while her posts and speeches were generated by tools like ChatGPT. Unlike earlier virtual influencers who needed a human team for content creation, Layli's entire persona is AI-driven.

The contest, organized by Fanvue, an influencer platform for AI and human creators, drew entries from about 1,500 AI programmers globally. Besides the title, Bessa received $5,000, support on Fanvue, and a publicist to boost Layli’s profile. The runners-up were AI contestants Lalina Valina from France and Olivia C from Portugal.

The competition judged entrants not only on appearance but also on their creators' use of AI tools and social media influence. Judges, including AI influencer Aitana Lopez and human pageantry historian Sally-Ann Fawcett, looked for contestants with powerful, positive messages.

However, the contest has sparked concerns about its implications for beauty standards. Experts worry that AI-generated images could further homogenize beauty ideals, as these tools often replicate existing patterns and norms, which can be biased. Dr. Kerry McInerney from the University of Cambridge expressed concerns that AI might reinforce existing sexist, fatphobic, and colorist beauty norms.

In summary, while the Miss AI beauty pageant represents a significant step in AI’s creative capabilities, it also raises important questions about the influence of AI on societal standards and perceptions.
